Surprise, we were accepted quite quickly, and received explanation from a very nice doctor about the checks Israel will need to do. One of them was a biopsy of the tumor. It provides information regarding the genomic structure of the tumor. Once you know your cancer’s genetic mutations, you may be able to use specific, “personalized” drugs that match your tumor. If these drugs exist, and if you can get them.

And of course, new scans: PET-CT, MRI of the brain (since lung cancer sends metastases to the brain. Never a dull moment to keep your mind busy…) Every possible scans and checks in order to understand what we are dealing with.

After a while the results came back, and they were quite horrifying: the cancer spread. We still had the genetic tests, which we didn’t quite understand until a nice doctor has arrived.

The doctor was serious but smiled after we started to joke a bit. He said that indeed it’s not much fun to get cancer, but still all the odds were in favor of Israel: he was young (56 at the time), non-smoker, was eating well, was running, and generally in a very healthy condition. He also mentioned that if Israel was a female, it would have been in his favor and increased his chances of survival. I told the doctor that we would do anything, including transitioning into a woman. The doctor smiled, and the conversation went on with the occasional joke thrown into the air.

This is an important point that I tried to adopt as a guiding rule: smile as much as you can!

Once you hear your beloved one has cancer, you stop smiling. All your world turns black, and you think you can’t be happy anymore. Like all your potential happiness is drained out of you.

Well, here’s a good tip. Once you digest the news, especially if you’re the caregiver, start smiling.

Find good reasons to joke, laugh, smile. It is not easy, but possible, and makes everybody feel better.

Mainly, your friends, the ones who support you all along the way, they are getting tired after a while if you radiate sadness, anger, complaints. No one likes to be nearby sad people for long. So, if you want more friends to be around, radiate hope and happiness. It won’t hurt, but rather plant some optimism and hope.

And you know what else? Don’t cancel plans. We had flight tickets to Hong Kong, and planned traveling there to visit our son who was on a long journey. The doctor was at first shocked that Israel wants to fly instead of going directly into treatments, but he understood and gave his permission for Israel to travel. So we did, and no regrets. A fun family trip, overcast by a cloud of worries, but yet we accumulated another experience together as a family, leaving us all with good memories.

<p
